Coronavirus in Canada: Is it safe to travel to Canada? Are there still flights?

Canada has 1,563 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 21 Canadians have died. The British government has advised all British nationals against all but essential international travel- but where do you stand if you have flights booked to Canada? has the answers.

The FCO previously wasn’t advising against all travel- instead, they chose to rule out high-risk areas.

However, the FCO advice has changed. On Wednesday March 18, the website was updated to say: “The FCO now advises British people against all non-essential travel worldwide.”

This advice takes effect immediately and applies initially for a period of 30 days.”

An even newer edition to the advice added: “If you live in the UK and are currently travelling abroad, you are strongly advised to return now.”

It explains: “The COVID-19 pandemic has led to unprecedented international border closures and other restrictions. All countries may restrict travel without notice.”

The Canadian government website also confirms this.

It says: As of March 18 the Government of Canada will ban foreign nationals from all countries except the United States from entering Canada.”

The Canadian authorities are not allowing most foreign nationals into Canada, including UK Nationals.

The official FCO advice in regards to Canada is as follows: “The Canadian authorities have introduced a number of travel restrictions in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.”

It added: “These are likely to affect commercial flight schedules to the UK and we recommend that British travellers who wish to leave by air make appropriate arrangements to ensure their travel plans can be met.

“Non-resident British nationals already in Canada should consider contacting airlines and/or tour operators in order to arrange departure as soon as practicably possible.”
